Denton Enters Stage Two of Drought Contingency Plan, Requiring Enhanced Water Conservation Measures

The City of Denton has officially entered Stage Two of its Drought Contingency Plan, effective Aug. 20, after exceeding daily water treatment capacity for three consecutive days. As a result, residents and businesses must now adhere to increased water conservation measures, including a new outdoor irrigation schedule limited to one day per week.

While our water supply remains healthy, these measures ensure sustainable usage during the repair period.

Key Details of Stage 2 Water Conservation Measures:

  • Outdoor Irrigation Restriction:Watering of lawns and gardens is permitted only once a week. Residents and businesses should refer to the designated watering day for their property, which is based on the last digit of your address.
    • Mondays are for business addresses ending in an even number (0, 2, 4, 6, and 8).
    • Tuesdays are for residential addresses ending in an even number (0, 2, 4, 6, and 8).
    • Wednesdays are for residential addresses ending in an odd number (1, 3, 5, 7, and 9).
    • Thursdays are for business addresses ending in an odd number (1, 3, 5, 7, and 9).
    • Only water between 6:00 pm and 10:00 am.
  • Water Use Efficiency: We encourage all residents to adopt water-saving practices, such as using drought-resistant plants, fixing leaks promptly, and reducing water use where possible.
  • Enforcement and Compliance: The City will be actively monitoring compliance with these measures. Violation of the irrigation restrictions may result in penalties.

As a reminder, our current situation arises from unexpected but necessary repairs on two damaged filters at our Lake Lewisville treatment facility, which have temporarily reduced our treatment capacity.

The filter repairs began today and will consist of the following:

  • Aug. 20: A contractor is on-site repairing one filter. We anticipate that the repair will be completed by Aug. 23.
  • Simultaneous Work: During this time, the contractor will also remove the second filter and inspect the underdrains.
  • Anticipated Capacity Restoration: Expected to return to full capacity by mid-September.

The City remains committed to working closely with residents to navigate these conditions. For additional information on water conservation tips, the watering schedule, and resources available to assist with compliance, please visit Water Wise Denton.
