Riverine Update

Riverine Update (Tuesday, November 12, 2024)

We know this is a concerning time for our residents as we see elevated river levels and water begin to encroach on some of our neighborhoods.

We want to assure you that the City of Richmond Hill is closely monitoring the situation and taking proactive steps to address the situation.

We are seeing street ponding in some low-lying areas, particularly in the Rushing Street Station neighborhood.

Important Reminder:

This situation is a result of heavy rainfall further north that affected the river levels. This is a riverine flooding event, meaning it's caused by the rivers exceeding their capacity.

Here's what we're doing:

Pumps Ready: We have pumps in place by the railroad, ready to be activated as soon as the water level is high enough for them to operate effectively.

Constant Monitoring: We are working closely with the state forecasting center to receive the most up-to-date information and predictions, allowing us to respond quickly to changing conditions.

The state forecasting center is running additional modeling at this time, and we expect to have more detailed information from them by early afternoon. We will share that information with you as soon as it becomes available.

How you can help keep safe:

Be Mindful of Road Conditions: Please be aware that due to the elevated river levels, some roads may have standing water. Exercise caution and avoid driving through any flooded areas.

Protect Your Vehicle: If you live in a low-lying area or your vehicle is parked in a spot that could flood, please move it to higher ground. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Sandbags Available: Don't forget that sand and sandbags are available for residents at the former GDOT lot located on Timber Trail. Sand is already onsite, but you'll need to bring your own shovel.

We understand this is a stressful situation, and we are committed to keeping you informed. Please continue to check official news sources and our city's social media pages for the latest updates.
