SHARPSBURG, MD - Antietam National Battlefield is preparing for a prescribed fire between Sept. 23 and Oct. 11, weather permitting. The planned fire will be on approximately 40 acres around Final Attack Trail and east of Branch Ave.

The goals of this fire are to reduce wildfire risk by burning accumulated thatch from the meadow floor, reduce the presence of invasive and woody vegetation, and encourage establishment of native grasses and wildflowers.

Many factors must align to conduct a prescribed fire and ensure public and firefighter safety. The timing of the prescribed fire is dependent on weather conditions being within required wind, temperature, and relative humidity parameters. Wildland fire engines, firefighters, and the nearby paved roads create buffers and fire breaks to ensure the fire is contained. National Park Service staff will monitor air quality and smoke impacts. Upon completion of the fire activity, wildland firefighters will continue to monitor the area to ensure the fire is contained.

This fire was originally planned for the week of Sept. 2.

Temporary Closures Planned: During the prescribed fire, public areas and trails between Rodman Ave to Harpers Ferry Rd will be closed until firing operations are complete. Additional park roads may need to be closed temporarily if smoke conditions reduce visibility.
