City of Fayetteville offering free wood chip mulch

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The City of Fayetteville is giving away wood chip mulch on a first-come, first-served basis until supplies are gone.

The giveaway is a result of an abundance of wood chip mulch at the Recycling and Trash Collection composting facility. The wood chip mulch is processed from collections through its yard waste program. Branches and brush are collected from residents and ground into wood chips.

The mulch may be picked up at the City's compost site, located at 1708 S. Armstrong Ave., during normal operating hours: 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.

Also, it will be available for pick up on two Saturdays in August: from 8 a.m. to noon Aug. 3 and Aug. 10.

The giveaway is not restricted to Fayetteville residents. A scoop of mulch (2.5 cubic yards) can be loaded into a truck bed or onto a trailer; there is no limit to the number of times someone may receive a scoop.

"The mulch doesn't undergo a composting process - it's just straight wood chips from all types of trees," Waste Reduction Manager Brian Pugh said. "The material is very good for mulching of areas in yards, berms around newly planted trees or just cover for moisture retention."
