Long Beach, CA - The City of Long Beach Department of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Communications and the Office of Third District Councilmember Kristina Duggan invite the community to Quake Heroes Earthquake Expo, taking place on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Recreation Park Community Center (4900 E. 7th St.). This free event, which coincides with National Preparedness Month, is designed to equip residents with knowledge and tools to prepare for an earthquake through interactive activities, resources and expert guidance.

"September is National Preparedness Month, and it is an important reminder that preparedness is our strongest ally during natural disasters and emergencies," said Mayor Rex Richardson. "This Earthquake Expo is a great opportunity for our community to come together, learn and take proactive steps to protect ourselves and our loved ones and in turn become a more resilient Long Beach."

Several City departments and local, regional and state partners, organizations and businesses will participate in the event, which will feature earthquake preparedness resource booths that will educate the community on the seven steps to earthquake safety, as well as an earthquake simulator that will allow participants to feel the power of an earthquake in a safe and controlled environment. The event will also feature free screenings and panel discussions of Quake Heroes, a film that blends Hollywood storytelling and real-life heroism and inspires individual and community resilience in preparation for the next big earthquake. The movie screenings, which will be followed by the panel discussions, will take place at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., and those interested in attending are encouraged to pre-register. Food offerings will also be available for purchase at the event.

"We're committed to making sure our community is well-prepared during a disaster," said Councilmember Kristina Duggan. "This event is a practical and fun way for families in Long Beach to learn what they need to protect themselves and their loved ones during earthquakes."

More information about the event, including a parking map, can be found here.

With recent earthquakes throughout California, the City provided important tips on how prepare for an earthquake and what to do during one, including DROP, COVER and HOLD ON. Earthquake preparedness will continue into October, with the annual Great ShakeOut earthquake drill on Oct. 17, 2024.

"Preparation can significantly mitigate the risks associated with earthquakes. This event is a crucial platform for sharing life-saving strategies and resources," said Reginald Harrison, Director of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Communications. "We invite everyone to join us and become an advocate for safety in their own homes and communities."
