Acting Chief Superintendent Brigid Beehag-Fisher for Tower Hamlets and Hackney, said: "Our thoughts are with the family of the young man who has lost his life.

"Police received a number of calls from concerned members of the public when the victim was found yesterday afternoon, but we think there are a number of other people who saw what happened who have yet to speak to us.

"My colleagues in our homicide team are working to establish exactly what happened and it's incredibly important that they hear from those people.

"Additional patrols will be conducted in the area while my officers will remain at the crime scene. I urge local people to speak to them and share information that they think can help us bring to justice whoever was responsible for this terrible violence."

A male who was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender remains in custody.

A crime scene is in place and is expected to remain so for some time.
