Dr Stuart Thompson, Senior Lecturer in Plant Biochemistry at the University of Westminster, has spoken to Gardens Illustrated about the best times to water plants to keep gardens thriving in hot weather. It has been republished in The Daily Mirror.

In the article, Dr Thompson sets out how best to look after garden plants in hot weather. He explains that those that are not in pots benefit most from being watered in the morning or in the evening, while potted plants need more water and shadier spots as they use up water much quicker.

Other top tips he offers is to avoid watering in full sun and to pay the most attention to plants that need shade as they are less adapted to the hot weather.

He also explains why some plants need less attention, saying: "Plants have systems to reduce their water loss, which are very effective in species from arid environments where light is intense, such as succulents and yuccas, and so these will need less care."
