Loudoun County Animal Services Hosts Annual “Clear the Shelters” Event August 17 through 25

Loudoun County Animal Services (LCAS) will host a weeklong, fee-waived, pet adoption event from Saturday, August 17 through Sunday, August 25. 2024, in participation with the nationwide "Clear the Shelters" adoption initiative. This year marks the 10th anniversary of NBCUniversal Local's pet adoption project, which has helped more than 1 million pets find new homes. To celebrate, LCAS is expanding the adoption event to a full week; waiving adoption fees for all available pets, which includes cats, kittens, dogs, rabbits, small pets and livestock, August 17-25.

To date in 2024, LCAS has seen a 20% increase in the number of animals coming into the shelter over last year. A recent influx in dogs has led to the setting up of temporary kennels to provide extra housing within the Animal Shelter. "We are hopeful this weeklong event will draw our community in to see the amazing pets we have for adoption," said Shelter Operations Manager Melissa Heard. "Our facility was not designed to hold this many dogs, so we are counting on adopters to come out help us continue our life-saving mission through adopting a pet!"

In addition to adoptions, other activities during the event will include a children's craft station and giveaways for all adopters, including supplies, treats and toys. Prospective adopters can view available pets online at loudoun.gov/animals. The standard adoption screening process still applies during this promotion; most adoptions can be completed on the same day.

All dogs, cats and rabbits adopted from LCAS are spayed or neutered and receive a microchip which is registered to their adopter. Dogs and cats also receive age-appropriate vaccinations and a coupon for a free GPS tracker. The shelter frequently has many pets available for adoption, including hamsters, guinea pigs, birds, rabbits, other small pets and livestock.
