Motion to make Councillors full-time defeated

At last night's special Council meeting, the motion to make all RMWB Councillors full-time was reconsidered and defeated.

This means that all RMWB Councillors will go back to being part-time and there will be no changes to Councillors' duties or compensation. No additional duties or compensation were given to Councillors between June 12 and July 3, as these details were not included in the June 11 motion.

June 11 motion

Council reconsidered and voted against the following motion previously passed at the June 11 Council meeting:

THAT Council members become full-time Councillors effective June 12, 2024.

Motion to reconsider

In order to debate the June 11 motion again, Council approved the following motion to reconsider, which Councillor Banjoko served notice of at the June 18 Council meeting:

WHEREAS on June 11, 2024, Councillor K. Cardinal brought forward a motion to have Council consider changing the position of Councillor to full time from the current structure as part time effective June 12, 2024; and

WHEREAS on June 11, 2024, Council dispensed the notice requirements for this motion and added it to the agenda for debate that evening; and

WHEREAS the public deserves the right to have an opportunity to speak to this matter prior to Council passing such a motion; and

WHEREAS Council's Procedure Bylaw, Bylaw No. 18/020, allows a Councillor who voted on the prevailing side of a motion, the authority to serve notice of intention to reconsider the motion at a subsequent Council meeting, provided that the motion has not been acted upon irrevocably.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT Council reconsider the motion of June 11, 2024, to approve the motion to change the position of Councillor to full time effective June 12, 2024, as opposed to part time.

Council meetings

The next regularly scheduled Council meeting is set for 6 p.m. on July 9.
