At the hearing of the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) on the use of data in the development of AI, eco, in collaboration with other industry associations, signed a Joint Statement.
In this statement, the undersigned associations welcome the EDPB's initiative to organise a stakeholder event to gather feedback on its announced opinion. Nevertheless, the industry associations call on the EDPB to take a clear, consistent and, above all, pragmatic approach to aligning the development of artificial intelligence with data protection.
The key here is to enable the development and use of "AI made in Europe'" while respecting Europe's high data protection standards. The interplay between AI and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) creates uncertainties for developers. This was already emphasised by the Draghi Report on the competitiveness of the European Union (EU), published in September.
The EDPB's position statement is therefore of crucial importance when it comes to how effectively Europe can leverage AI while ensuring that the available applications are aligned with European values. The full joint statement can be found here.
