Actress, comedian, and Brenau alum Dulcé Sloan celebrated the release of her first book, "Hello, Friends!" with the Brenau community on Tuesday, Sept. 10.

Sloan, who won an Emmy this fall for her hosting duties on The Daily Show, has appeared on numerous television programs, including The Daily Show, Verified Stand Up, and The Great North, as well as her own stand up performances around the United States. She earned her bachelor's degree at Brenau in 2005.

"The highlight of my comedy career was being able to start a scholarship fund for minority theater students at my college," Sloan said to Albert Lawrence following her Emmy win. "This is the second year of the Sloan Scholarship Fund. So that's been the highlight of all of this, to give back and help."

During her talk-back at Brenau, Sloan urged students to think about the big picture, hone their craft, and not rely on trends in the industry.

"The industry keeps moving, so that's why you get a degree in theater acting," Sloan said. "Theater is thousands of years old; film didn't come out till a hundred years ago. The acting is the same, but it's easier to go bigger to smaller, than smaller to bigger."

She said many TikTok stars and other influencers struggled in the industry, despite having fans who enjoyed their content.

"A phone screen is only so big. You don't perform for a phone," Sloan said. "The reason people are so dynamic on their phone is because they're thinking of a live performance. Live performance is the basis of what you're doing."

Sloan signed books after the talk with students and alumni, gifting about 40 books to the students who attended.
