Lee University will host a senior art show at the Squires Library Fine Art Gallery from Thursday, Nov. 7 to Tuesday, Nov. 26. The exhibition will feature art by Brooklyn Fairchild, a senior art education major, and Joseph (Joey) Martindale, a senior graphic design major.
An opening reception will be held on Nov. 7, from 5-6 p.m., where the artists will talk about their pieces and answer questions.
"I am so proud of the work Joey and Brooklyn are doing," said Victoria Phillips, visiting assistant professor of art at Lee. "I know the time and energy that has gone into the development of the pieces for their show, and I am excited to see what is ahead of them."
Fairchild's artwork includes crocheted pieces inspired by the fashion from the 1960s and '70s that depict scenes of life meant to invoke nostalgia, warmth, and belonging. She encourages guests to look at, touch, and smell her pieces to fully understand her themes of memory.
"I wanted to create pieces that would transport people to another place," said Fairchild. "Sight, touch, and smell all work together in these pieces on display to do just that. Art has been used for centuries as a means of remembrance and that is what I hope to express here - with an added layer of comfort!"
Martindale's work focuses upon the artist concept of "seeing things rightly." His art aims to show what seeing, hearing, and knowing someone on a deeper level looks like in real life.
"My hope is that my art shows people the value of taking time to see people well, hear people well, and ultimately love those around them in a way that requires empathy and open mindedness," said Martindale. "My goal for this artwork is to highlight the value of the diversity in human lives and pointing back to the one who creates these lives."
The Senior Art Showcase is free and open to the public during regular operating hours of the library, which can be found by visiting libguides.com/homepage.
