World cinema professor’s show receives national acclaim

A show produced by Clemson University World Cinema Professor of Practice Sam Sokolow has earned a coveted award from the African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) this summer.

National Geographic's biographical anthology drama series "Genius: MLK/X" was awarded the best limited series/special series by the AAFCA in July, which recognizes achievements in TV and streaming. Episodes of "Genius: MLK/X" can be streamed on Disney+ and Hulu. Sokolow has served as an executive producer since 2017.

"When a project that you're involved with gets an accolade like this, it is personally fulfilling, and there is pride in knowing a team came together and made something that impacted people in a way. It's wonderful. It's not why you do the work. You do it because you love it and are passionate about it. Our show has a social impact and it's hard to express this joy.

Sokolow joined Clemson University's Department of Interdisciplinary Studies in Fall 2023 with the goal of teaching students the trades of Hollywood in film, commercials, documentaries and television shows. Should "Genius" be renewed for a fifth season, Sokolow said he would be honored to continue serving as an executive producer.

"Whenever I'm asked what my favorite season is, it's always the next one," he said. "It means a great deal."
