FASEB DEAI Committee Introduces New DEAI Glossary

Wednesday, November 6, 2024

The FASEB Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion (DEAI) Committee has introduced a new DEAI Glossary. This resource aims to create a common language around DEAI principles, empowering FASEB society members and the wider community to engage in more impactful discussions and iniatives.

A Comprehensive DEAI Resource

The glossary is divded into three sections to reflect the diverse aspects of DEAI work:
  • Accessibility: Focused on equitable access for individuals with disabilites, this section ensures that people with disabilities can access the same information and services as those without, with ease of use and independence.
  • Belonging: Defines belonging as a feeling of acceptance and inclusion, where individuals can be their authentic selves. This section highlights the impact of belonging on engagement and performance, especially in work environments.
  • Culture: Examines societal and systemic factors shaping identity and social interactions. Culture refers to shared behaviors and understandings learned through socialization, emphasizing the importance of addressing these influences for equity.

A Living Document

The FASEB DEAI Glossary is a living document, designed to evolve as our understanding of diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusivity continues to grow. As language and terminology shift in response to community input and societal changes, this resource will be regularly updated to reflect these developments.

By offering this glossary, FASEB aims to support its member societies and the scientific community in using inclusive language that is reflective of the ongoing efforts toward equity and justice in science.

Explore and Share

FASEB society members and the broader community are encouraged to explore the glossary, use it as a resource, and share it with colleagues. It is through shared understanding and intentional action that we can continue to make meaningful strides toward creating inclusive environments in science and beyond.
