Live Fire Training Set for Friday, Aug. 30

AMES, Iowa - The Ames Fire Department will be conducting live fire training at a vacated house at 5501 E. Lincoln Way on Friday, Aug. 30, weather permitting.

Live fire training will begin around 9 a.m. with several small interior fires. By mid-afternoon firefighters let the house burn completely and stay on scene until the structure has been reduced to smoldering materials. The remains may smolder for several days until the materials can be safely removed by a hired contractor. Impacts to the surrounding neighborhood are expected to be minimal based on the isolated location of the property. Residents may experience smoke and rusty water in the area, but fire crews will work to minimize any issues.

"Live fire trainings are important for skill development," said Ames Fire Chief Rich Higgins. "This is the second scheduled live fire training of the summer, and I anticipate it will go as smoothly as the first one."

All live fire training is conducted in accordance with State of Iowa Department of Natural Resources and National Fire Protection Association Standards. Traffic on East Lincoln Way will remain open during these events.
