City to begin rehabilitation of Hawaiʻi Kai bridges

Work will take place at three separate locations in Hawaiʻi Kai

HONOLULU - The City and County of Honolulu Department of Design and Construction wishes to inform the public of upcoming rehabilitation work at three bridges in Hawai'i Kai. The bridges undergoing rehabilitation are:

  1. Hawai'i Kai Drive Bridge
  2. Keahole Street Bridge over Kuapa Pond crossing the Hawaiʻi Kai marina
  3. Wailuā Street Bridge, also over Kuapa Pond

The rehabilitation work will involve the demolishing and restoring spalled concrete in the substructure. This effort aims to extend the lifespan of the bridges, address potential hazards, and ensure the bridges remain safe for public. Construction is expected to start on Monday, July 8, 2024 and will last approximately six months, barring unforeseen conditions and weather events. Work hours will be Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., excluding holidays.

Construction will be performed in phases to minimize inconvenience to the public. During this period, the bridges will remain open to vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Temporary lane closures may be implemented if necessary. Access through the marina water way will be affected by construction equipment, but all bridge locations will remain navigable. Motorists, vessel operators and pedestrians should allow extra time while traveling through the area and observe all posted signs, traffic controls, and Special Duty Officers.

The contractor will also place "NO PARKING" signs along impacted areas near each bridge site one week in advance. Drivers are asked to observe the dates and times of these notices as vehicles parked on posted streets will be towed at the owner's expense.

Every effort will be made to complete this essential work as quickly and with as little inconvenience to the community as possible. The City appreciates the patience of the community during this process. Questions and comments may be directed to the City and County of Honolulu, Department of Design and Construction, at (808) 768-8400.
