Nutanix Expands Support for vSAN Ready Nodes

Nutanix now supports the reuse of certain vSAN Ready Node hardware, allowing organizations to repurpose their previously-purchased hardware and transition smoothly from VMware to Nutanix.

In light of recent changes following Broadcom's acquisition of VMware*, many organizations are currently re-assessing their reliance on VMware. Concerns about potential price increases, reduced product offerings and diminished future investments are prompting VMware customers to explore alternatives.

For those considering a change, our ability to support the reuse of vSAN Ready Nodes makes Nutanix even easier to migrate to.

Understanding vSAN Ready Nodes and Nutanix Integration

To understand the significance of our latest offerings, it's essential to understand the role of vSAN Ready Nodes. These nodes, specifically designed and certified for VMware's vSAN deployments, are similar enough to the many hardware platforms already supported by Nutanix that they could be certified for Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI) with relative ease. With many of these nodes already deployed and in use, the opportunity to repurpose them is a strategic advantage for our customers.

Nutanix can repurpose these existing vSAN Ready Nodes by integrating them with NCI and the AHV hypervisor. This approach aligns with modern infrastructure needs by leveraging existing hardware investments to support emerging trends like AI or modern apps.

By reusing server hardware, organizations can migrate to a robust and easier-to-manage HCI platform and significantly lower their total cost of ownership (TCO), all while benefiting from the leading-edge technology and support of Nutanix. It also reflects our commitment to offering flexible, future-proof solutions that meet the evolving needs of our customers.

From Integrated Hardware to Flexible Repurposing

Historically, Nutanix launched in 2011 with solutions that required customers to buy hardware and software together to ensure efficient installments and optimized performance. This tight integration streamlined deployments, simplified parts replacement, and made full-stack life cycle management possible. However, customers with large existing hardware deployments are willing to sacrifice some hardware management benefits to avoid needing to purchase all new hardware.

Nutanix subsequently adapted its strategy to support a wide variety of servers manufactured by all the leading manufacturers, which opened up the opportunity of repurposing of hardware previously invested in by customers. By integrating our software with hardware that organizations already own-such as vSAN Ready Nodes-Nutanix allows customers to reduce their overall expenses while maintaining a high level of performance and efficiency.

For customers who have recently invested in vSAN Ready Nodes, this new Nutanix solution allows them to leverage their investments by repurposing these nodes within the Nutanix ecosystem.

Streamlining the Migration Process

Nutanix simplifies the migration process by offering a streamlined certification path for vSAN Ready Nodes, allowing validation and integration of components. This efficiency accelerates time to market for new servers and technologies.

Unlike traditional software architecture that supports vSAN Ready Nodes, Nutanix architecture delivers the performance and resiliency needed for the most demanding applications, enabling organizations to standardize on a single platform for all of their workloads.

Key Benefits

  • Resiliency and uptime: Nutanix ensures 24x7 operations with superior resiliency and uptime, featuring built-in data protection and automatic failover that prevents data loss and maintains continuous availability.
  • Simplified management: Nutanix simplifies management with a unified interface for compute, storage, and networking.
  • Enabling the most demanding workloads and performance enhancements: Nutanix supports high-performance databases and other highly critical applications with enhanced performance capabilities and unparalleled resiliency at scale, offering greater flexibility and scalability than traditional vSAN Ready Nodes.

Hardware Certification and Roadmap

Hardware certification ensures optimal performance of our customers' IT infrastructure, including motherboards, NICs and configurations, with Nutanix software. This process verifies compatibility and can also offer cost savings through certified vSAN Ready Nodes.

Certifying Dell and HPE vSAN Ready Node hardware to run on Nutanix can streamline deployment and reduce integration issues. Currently, Nutanix supports models in the following series:

  • Dell PowerEdge (PE): See specific models and specifications in our documentation
  • HPE: DL Gen 10, DL Gen 10 Plus and DL Gen 11 series

Nutanix has completed about 50% of its vSAN Ready certifications. Additional vSAN Ready Node Certifications are under development, expanding its certified hardware options and improving deployment flexibility.

Conclusion

This new solution by Nutanix offers significant benefits for technical infrastructure by enabling the repurposing of existing vSAN Ready Node hardware. Organizations can now transition smoothly from VMware and leverage their current investments, all while seamlessly supporting modern applications and trends like AI.
