BOROUGH PRESIDENT GIBSON IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE NATIONAL PUERTO RICAN DAY PARADE, INC. HOSTS THE FIRST EVER PUERTO RICO FLAG RAISING AT BRONX BOROUGH HALL

Bronx, NY - Today, Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson, in conjunction with the National Puerto Rican Day Parade, Inc. (NPRDP), hosted the first-ever Puerto Rico flag-raising in the Bronx. Officially known as the flag of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, it consists of five equal horizontal stripes that alternate from red to white, with a blue equilateral triangle based on the hoist side bearing a large five-pointed white star in the center. The white star stands for the island, the three sides of the triangle for the three branches of government, the blue for the sky and coastal waters, the red for the blood shed by warriors, and the white for liberty, victory, and peace.

David Rodriguez, Anchor of Noticiero 47 Telemundo who was born in Carolina, Puerto Rico and spent time as a youth in the Bronx, emceed the event, and Lillian Lopez-Rodriguez, Chair of the National Puerto Rican Day Parade, Inc., shared remarks.

The Borough President also issued a proclamation declaring it Puerto Rico Day in the Bronx.
