Beijing Tops Again with 116 Local Enterprises Making China's Top 500 Sci-Tech Innovators

According to the recently released 2024 China's Top Science and Technology Innovation Index Report, 116 Beijing-based enterprises were shortlisted for China's top 500 scientific and technological innovators, with eight universities and colleges in the country's top 50 for scientific and technological innovation performances and 26 research institutions in the top 50 for the same cause, all at the forefront of their respective fields. A total of 150 scientific and technological innovation entities in Beijing were shortlisted in this evaluation, indicating a number ranking first nationwide and solidifying Beijing's leading role in the scientific and technological advancements in China.

The report shows that the finalists from Beijing are driving Beijing's high-quality development primarily in high-tech sectors like electronic information, biomedicine, and new energy. Entities like BOE Technology Group Co., Ltd. (BOE), JD.com, and Douyin continue to hold on to their leading positions.

Universities, colleges and research institutions are fundamental to basic research in China and key contributors to significant scientific and technological advancements. A total of eight universities and colleges in Beijing were shortlisted in China's top 50 universities and colleges for scientific and technological innovation, with Tsinghua University recognized as a global leader in nanomaterials and energy research and Peking University moving up the list for its achievements in AI and life sciences. Tsinghua University, Peking University, Beijing Institute of Technology, and Beihang University are all notable for active submissions of patent applications in relevant fields, and continuous efforts in pushing boundaries of what can be achieved regarding cutting-edge technologies, thus contributing considerably to the city's scientific and technological innovation.

Among the top 50 research institutions nationwide recognized for their scientific and technological innovation performances, 26 are located in Beijing, a number topping that of other cities in China. Research institutions such as the China Electric Power Research Institute, the Institute of Automation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the China Academy of Railway Sciences all achieved significant breakthroughs in their research, actively bringing together industries, academia, research institutions and end-users.
