Congressman DeSaulnier Statement on Democrats’ Success in Lowering Prescription Drug Costs

Washington, D.C. - Today, Congressman Mark DeSaulnier (CA-10) made the following statement on Medicare's historic agreement with several drug companies to lower the cost of 10 frequently used medications. This achievement was made possible by House Democrats' and the Biden-Harris Administration's passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, which gave Medicare the power to negotiate lower prices for older Americans.

"Throughout my time in Congress, I have been working tirelessly to make prescription drugs more affordable for the millions of Americans who rely on them, starting as a senior member of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform where I led the effort to investigate pharmaceutical pricing and harmful business practices that made drug prices out of reach for too many while executives at those companies padded their pockets. This investigation revealed the need for structural reforms to lower drug costs, which were achieved through passage of the Inflation Reduction Act that I was proud to vote for," said Congressman Mark DeSaulnier. "As someone who has relied on one of the drugs included in today's agreement, Imbruvica, to treat my blood cancer and keep me alive, I know firsthand the impact this action will have for countless Americans who will no longer be forced to choose between life-saving medication and other everyday necessities, and I look forward to continuing my work as Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions to expand access to these lower drug prices and all forms of health care so every American can get the treatment they need."
