Public Input Sought on Projects for Lexington Road Corridor through Aug. 11

The Capital Projects Department invites residents to provide input through August 11, 2024, on potential improvement projects to help improve connectivity and pedestrian access on the Lexington Road corridor. Funding of $8 million will come from the Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (TSPLOST) 2023 voter-approved program through Project #2 - Lexington Road Corridor Improvements.

The project webpage at www.accgov.com/lexingtonroad includes details on possible projects, reference material, maps, and a public input survey link that will be open through August 11. Residents can also sign up for email and text notifications in order to receive information about key future dates and opportunities for additional input.

In addition to the online survey, an open house session is scheduled for Thursday, August 1 at the Police Department East Precinct (3035 Lexington Road) from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Anyone can drop-in to ask questions of Capital Projects staff and provide input on the proposed projects.

Some of the projects under consideration include pedestrian crossings near the Jail, the Diversion Center, Hughes Drive, and Cooper Road; shared-use paths to connect Lexington Road to the Firefly Trail, Cherokee Road, and Satterfield Park; a signalized intersection at Southeast Clarke Park; and sidewalk gap completions.

This project is a continuation of TSPLOST 2018 Project 14: Lexington Highway Corridor Improvements. Earlier public engagement in 2020, 2021, and 2022 helped identify and prioritize potential improvements with the project user group.

The Lexington Road corridor segment under consideration for improvement projects runs 3.25 miles between Johnson Road east of Loop 10 and Southeast Clarke Park. TSPLOST improvements do not include ongoing work at the Loop 10 / Lexington Road / Barnett Shoals intersection, which is a project of the Georgia Department of Transportation.

The Mayor and Commission are tentatively scheduled to vote on a final list of project concepts at their September 3, 2024 Regular Session voting meeting.
