Flying the flag for Ukraine

Waverley Borough Council showed solidarity with the people of Ukraine by flying their national flag outside its offices at The Burys all weekend for Ukrainian Independence Day.

Saturday 24 August marked exactly 33 years since Ukraine declared independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, and 30 months since Russia's invasion of the country.

The Mayor of Waverley, Councillor John Ward, raised the Ukrainian flag in a demonstration of support for the refugees who have been forced to flee their homes, and to honour those who chose to stay and fight for their country.

After the flag was raised, the Mayor joined the Ukrainian community in Godalming at the Wilfrid Noyce Community Centre for an afternoon of celebrations that included live Ukrainian folk singing, a charity chess match, traditional dancing and delicious local cuisine.

This year, the UK Government, in partnership with NATO, led an international campaign to Make Noise for Ukraine on Ukrainian Independence Day. People from around the world shared videos on social media of singing, clapping and chanting 'Slava Ukraini' to show they have not forgotten the plight of Ukrainian people.

The Mayor of Waverley, Councillor John Ward said:

"I'm proud that Waverley is standing alongside communities across the world to show support for Ukraine during this immensely difficult time.

"Ukrainian Independence Day should be a time of celebration, but the ongoing conflict at home means it's a bittersweet day for Ukrainian people, and a stark reminder of why they are fighting.

"The courage, resilience and unwavering spirit shown by Ukrainians over the past two and a half years has been quite remarkable, and I hope the future will bring peace, prosperity and lasting freedom. Slava Ukraini."
