Tarleton State Tennis starts fall campaign at Texas State Invite

STEPHENVILLE, Texas - Tarleton State Tennis begins the 2024 fall campaign in San Marcos, Texas, for the Texas State Invite Saturday through Sunday.

The event will be a dual match format that features four schools: Tarleton State, Texas State, Stephen F. Austin and McNeese. Fans can watch the action on WAC International.

Tarleton State's international roster for 2024-25 has eight countries represented, with six letterwinners from the previous year returning to go with a pair of international newcomers. The Texans' returners combined for 50 singles wins last spring.

After transferring to Tarleton State from Lamar, senior made an immediate impact for the Texans last season. The Spaniard led the Texans in singles wins last year at 18-2, earning a spot on the WAC Singles All-Conference Second Team. Lorca was instrumental in Tarleton State's finalist finish at the 2024 WAC Championship and was one of two Texans to be named to the WAC All-Tournament Team.

Joining the Texans from Liberty, senior strengthened Tarleton State in doubles last season. The two-time WAC Doubles Player of the Week finished 15-6 in doubles, tied for the most doubles wins on the team.

2023 WAC Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year finished last season with 15 doubles wins, including a 9-0 start with two different doubles partners. Persson ended her sophomore campaign with two singles wins, including a WAC Tournament semifinals victory over UT Arlington's Tara Gorsinek 2-6 6-4 6-0.

Going 11-4 in singles during her sophomore campaign, junior brings veteran experience to the Texans in 2024-25. The Canadian ended last season with five consecutive singles wins en route to being named to the WAC All-Tournament Team.

Former Tarleton State assistant coach Sonia Carlson will lead McNeese in her first season as head coach after the Cowgirls won 20 matches last year. Former conference rival Stephen F. Austin will get a rematch with the Texans starting Saturday, where Tarleton State knocked out the Lumberjacks in the 2024 WAC Championships en route to the finals. Host school Texas State finished the 2023-24 campaign at 11-8.

Under head coach in five years at the Division I level, Tarleton State has won the WAC Coach of the Year award, the WAC Player of the Year award, the WAC Freshman of the Year award, and 14 All-Conference honors (seven Singles All-WAC First Team, one Doubles All-WAC First Team, five Singles All-WAC Second Team, one Doubles All-WAC Second Team). The Texans have also earned 33 midseason monthly or weekly awards (two Singles Player of the Month, one Doubles Team of the Month, 15 Singles Player of the Week, and 15 Doubles Team of the Week).
