Grassley Recognized for Biofuels Leadership

WASHINGTON - Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) accepted Growth Energy's 2024 "Fueling Growth Award" for his efforts to support biofuels producers. Grassley is a lifelong family farmer and senior member of the Agriculture and Finance Committees.

"As an Iowa corn and soybean grower, I'm well familiar with biofuels' many benefits. Homegrown biofuels are good for Americans' pocketbooks, the environment and our national security - in short, they're good, good and good," Grassley said. "Iowans' leadership and role in diversifying our energy portfolio, from the farm to the refinery, is unmatched. I'll keep my foot on the gas and continue working diligently to expand biofuels markets at the federal policymaking tables."

Grassley collaborates extensively with Senate colleagues, the executive branch and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to find ways to advance renewable energies and restore integrity to the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). Since he helped establish the RFS in the Energy Policy Act of 2005, Grassley has conducted oversight to ensure the executive branch implements the law as intended. He has stood up for biofuels and the importance of the RFS countless times by calling out the EPA across administrations.

Among other actions, Grassley this Congress has:

  • Reintroduced bipartisan legislation to permanently allow the year-round, nationwide sale of ethanol blends higher than 10 percent.

  • Helped secure a waiver to ensure drivers could access E-15 at the pump this summer.

  • Pushed back against the Biden-Harris administration's modified GREET Model, which makes it harder for producers to contribute to sustainable aviation fuels.

  • Brought to Washington bureaucrats' attention Iowans' concerns about the modified GREET Model and its impractical requirements.

  • Amplified on the Senate floor the ways in which biofuels reduce emissions.

  • Participated in a question-and-answer session regarding Iowa's role in boosting domestic clean energy production.

  • Sought answers on potentially fraudulent used cooking oil imports, urging the Biden-Harris administration to prioritize U.S. feedstocks over foreign substitutes.

  • Pushed the EPA to raise 2024-25 Renewable Volume Obligations, underscoring the negative impacts current levels are having on biodiesel plants in Iowa and elsewhere.

  • Demanded the EPA increase 2026 RFS volumes for biomass-based diesel and advanced biofuels, with an equal increase in total volumes.

  • Delivered remarks on federal policies and regulations affecting the biofuels industry at a FUELIowa board meeting.

  • Acknowledged farmers and producers who move biofuels to market in a resolution designating May 2024 as "Renewable Fuels Month."
