Schumer: Fed $$$ Flowing To The North Country And Upstate NY Than Ever Before!

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer today announced $7,587,135 in federal funding for six projects across the North Country & Upstate New York through the Northern Border Regional Commission (NBRC). Schumer said these projects will help address critical needs across the region, including improving healthcare access for rural communities, improving trails in the Adirondacks, strengthening water infrastructure, and more to help improve quality of life and spur economic development in the region.

"From improving the Adirondack trails to boosting healthcare accsess for rural areas like Lewis County, this major $7.5+ million will help create new jobs, strengthen our infrastructure, and a boost quality of life across the region," said Senator Schumer. "I fought to deliver historic increases for the NBRC because I knew that would deliver major funding for communities across New York. Now from the Adirondacks to Wayne County communities are reaping the rewards. I'm proud to deliver this major federal investment to help communities tackle issues facing our rural areas and lay the foundation for a better future here in the North Country and Upstate NY."

These much needed 2024 Catalyst Program Spring Round Awards for the NBRC follow Schumer helping deliver a historic $150 million for the NBRC through the Bipartisan Infrastructure & Jobs Law. This has resulted in a surge in federal investment, including in 2023 when the senator delivered $10 million for projects across Upstate through the NRBC-the largest annual investment for Upstate New York in the program's history. The NRBC funding has nearly doubled since 2022 because the senators have ardently supported closing the rural digital divide in Upstate New York.

Schumer is also currently leading the charge in the Senate to renew the Northern Border Regional Commission's economic development programs and create more agency jobs. The senators introduced the Northern Border Regional Commission (NBRC) Reauthorization Act of 2023 this past February, which would reauthorize the NBRC for another ten years, increase annual authorized funding levels, and target funds to addressing childcare and health care needs, supporting housing projects, building climate resilient infrastructure, and combatting the opioid crisis, in addition to the agency's focus of creating new jobs, promoting business retention and expansion, making critical investment in public infrastructure, and boosting tourism across Upstate New York counties.
