Smart Water Protection: How Dahua Uses Digital Intelligence to Upgrade a 2,200 Year Old Water Conservancy SystemThe Dujiangyan is an ancient irrigation system in Sichuan,[...]

The Dujiangyan is an ancient irrigation system in Sichuan, China. This great irrigation and flood control project is still in use today, producing comprehensive benefits in flood control, irrigation, water transport and general water consumption.

The total length of the water system is 3,352.6 kilometers, with two reservoirs. By 2023, Dujiangyan has irrigated over 7,554 kmĀ² (11.332 million mu) of land, about a quarter of the effective irrigated area in Sichuan Province. Thanks to ancient knowledge and great craftsmanship, people in this region can lead a better life. Nowadays, the new generation continues to keep this wisdom alive and optimize Dujiangyan with the power of technology.

Celebrating Achievements, Navigating Challenges

In recent years, the local government has actively promoted the fine and regular management of water functional areas and has engaged in sewage treatment projects across the entire region. Empowered by outstanding technologies, this water protection initiative has reached a new height. The city has successively established an information-based supervisory model, utilizing a 2,200-meter fully enclosed pulsed electronic fence, 19 sets of mobile electronic fences, 289 sets of video monitoring equipment, 24 automatic water quality monitoring stations, and 16 atmospheric monitoring stations. This scientific monitoring approach has enabled real-time access to water environment data, atmospheric data, and video footage, greatly enhancing traditional management and effectively improving the efficiency and accuracy of water conservation initiatives.

However, there are still some challenges ahead. On-site O&M personnel need to deal with a large amount of data scattered across multiple systems, making data management more challenging. Field workers need to handle some situations on the scene, but in some cases (e.g. sewage discharge), the issue may have already been solved by the time they arrive. At this point, they have to contact the management center just to retrieve earlier footages and data and transmit them remotely. The whole process may take them half a day, greatly affecting their work efficiency.

A Next-level Upgrade: Embracing Smart Solutions

The Dujiangyan is a testament to the unwavering efforts many individuals. Their advocacies to further upgrade their knowledge about water control has significantly optimized the water conservation today, making it even more efficient and intelligent. Dahua Technology, together with its ecological partner, has created a smart IoT sensing platform to assist in the intelligent management of water resources.

Through the platform, water resources can be presented more scientifically based on various data from water quality monitoring stations, atmospheric monitoring stations, and other facilities. The management center collects and integrates data resources from multiple sources and displays them visually on a map, enabling internal maintenance personnel to quickly inspect various water environment indicators on a single system and promptly understand the water quality situation in the region.

Furthermore, thresholds are set for each water quality data point. When there is a sudden change in data from a certain water area, the maintenance personnel will receive an alert from the platform, enabling them to promptly dispatch relevant staff to handle the situation. Once on site, field workers can directly access videos and data history through a mobile app, which allows them to quickly respond to detected abnormalities. In addition, they also regularly review water quality trends and alarm trends in various regions. The platform visually presents changes in various data over different time periods, providing a more scientific basis for the conservation of water resources.

Utilizing video intelligence technology and rich IoT device data, Dahua's smart IoT sensing platform can comprehensively and accurately organize the water conservancy data of Dujiangyan and present it in an orderly manner. Through the interconnection of IoT devices, the platform can achieve both remote supervision and intelligent control of water facilities. Take a single inspection as an example, the time required for it has been reduced from the original 2 hours to just 30 minutes, which significantly improves management efficiency and safety. This marks a new milestone in the water conservancy management in Dujiangyan, providing solid support for the effective governance of water resources in the region.
