Insurance Council of Texas Urges Back to School Road Safety

AUSTIN, TX - As the new school year kicks off, the Insurance Council of Texas (ICT) is urging all Texans to prioritize safety on the road, especially in and around school zones. With the roads becoming busier as students, parents, and educators return to their routines, ICT's #SurviveTheDriveTX campaign aims to remind everyone of the critical importance of driving responsibly.

"Back-to-school season brings increased traffic and a higher potential for accidents, particularly in school zones," said Rich Johnson, Director of Communications and Public Affairs for the Insurance Council of Texas. "By following these simple safety tips, we can all play a part in protecting our children and ensuring a safe start to the school year."

Five Essential Tips for Back-to-School Road Safety

Avoid Distracted Driving

Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of accidents, particularly among teens. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that texting while driving increases the risk of a crash by 23 times. ICT advises parents to lead by example by avoiding phone use while driving and encourages teens to set up their GPS and music before hitting the road.

Follow the Speed Limit, Especially in School Zones

School zones are high-risk areas where children are walking, biking, and crossing streets. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) stresses the importance of adhering to speed limits in these zones, where fines for speeding can double. Even a few miles over the limit can have severe consequences, making it crucial to drive cautiously.

Never Drive Under the Influence

Driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or even prescription medications significantly increase the risk of fatal accidents. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that teen drivers with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08% or higher are 17 times more likely to die in a crash. ICT encourages parents to have open conversations with their teens about the dangers of impaired driving and the importance of safe alternatives.

Be Extra Cautious in School Zones

School zones are unpredictable, with children crossing streets, school buses loading and unloading, and congested traffic. ICT reminds drivers to be vigilant, watch for pedestrians, and always stop for school buses with flashing lights. Parents are also urged to follow drop-off and pick-up protocols to ensure a smooth and safe process.

Set a Good Example for Your Teen

Teens often emulate their parents' driving habits. ICT emphasizes the importance of parents being role models by obeying traffic laws, buckling up, and driving calmly and patiently. Responsible driving behaviors demonstrated by parents can have a lasting impact on teens.
