PeaceHealth Rides Bike Share reaches 1 million trips

In October, Eugene and Springfield's bike share program, PeaceHealth Rides, surpassed 1 million trips since the program launched in 2018. These 1 million trips have covered approximately 1.4 million miles - the equivalent of more than 50 laps around the equator!

Additionally, the past three weeks represent the top three weeks of ridership ever recorded for this program.

In April 2024, PeaceHealth Rides expanded to 450 bikes and into downtown Springfield. As a result of this expansion - which includes the addition of 70 additional bike share hubs throughout the expanded bike share service area - bike share ridership in 2024 is tracking to be the strongest year yet.

Three recent weeks of bike share ridership are the program's three highest on record:

  • Sept. 30 - Oct 6 2024 achieved 7,670 trips (third highest week ever)
  • Oct. 7 - 13 2024, 9,239 trips! (highest week ever)
  • Oct. 14 - 20 2024, 7,730 trips. (second highest week ever)

PeaceHealth Rides anticipates more than 30,000 trips in October 2024.

"As the sponsor of PeaceHealth Rides, we are extremely pleased to see how the community has embraced bike share since its introduction in 2018," said Jim McGovern, MD, PeaceHealth Oregon chief hospital executive. "An active, healthy and inexpensive means of transportation is a very valuable addition to our community. We are privileged to be a part of this program."

"The City of Eugene has ambitious goals related to increasing trips by biking, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and increasing public health. Making it easier to ride with good infrastructure and a public bike share system helps us achieve those goals," said Shane Rhodes, City of Eugene Transportation Options Program Manager.

In 2023, there were over 375,000 trips by bike and e-scooter share combined, before the e-scooter share pilot program ended as a result of the e-scooter equipment provider's insolvency.

"During the 2023 e-scooter pilot we had about a 10% reduction in bike share trips, but over 220,000 e-scooter share trips," said Brodie Hylton, Cascadia Mobility Executive Director. "There were challenges with the e-scooter share program overall, including parking compliance issues, but it was useful to understand the utility of different self-service micromobility options. I believe that more shared mobility options, more thoughtfully deployed and better integrated with LTD, could make it easier to get around without a car."

Looking ahead, Cascadia Mobility, the University of Oregon, and the cities of Eugene and Springfield are exploring how to make it easier for people to depend less on driving through a burgeoning collaboration with LTD. Together with LTD, program partners are exploring the possibility of introducing e-bike share or even e-scooter share as part of the local transit mix in the years to come.

"On behalf of Lane Transit District, I want to offer my congratulations on reaching 1 million bike share rides! This important milestone affirms the value of shared mobility to our community. Lane Transit District is proud to partner with Cascadia Mobility and we look forward to opportunities to increase access to this fun and healthy mode of travel." said Jameson Auten, LTD CEO.
