City of Waco Launches Water Service Line Material Map

Published on October 16, 2024

The City of Waco has launched a new Service Line Material Map. This online tool allows residents to easily identify the material of their water service line. The map was created after the City of Waco took inventory of over 50,000 service lines in compliance with the Environmental Protection Agency's new Lead and Copper Rule.

There are no known lead services within the City's system or on the customer side. However, the City remains committed to replacing any lead lines discovered during maintenance or repairs.

The map and more information about the City of Waco's proactive approach to addressing lead in water service lines will also be available at Waco City Hall (300 Austin Ave) and Central Library (1717 Austin Ave).

It's important to note that the City of Waco does not have information about the materials used in private plumbing within homes and businesses. Customers who wish to investigate their own plumbing systems can consult with a licensed plumber for an inspection.

Replacing Lead Service Lines

The responsibility for replacing customer service lines lies with the property owner. However, the City of Waco offers income-based assistance through the Lead is Preventable Program (LIPP).

Customer Notifications

If a lead service line is identified, either on the city or customer side, property owners and tenants will receive a notification letter within 30 days. The City will also provide customers with a filtered pitcher and resources to assist in replacing the lead service line.

To minimize potential lead exposure during the replacement process, customers will be provided with a water filter pitcher and instructions. Additionally, those considered at-risk for lead in their drinking water will have the opportunity to have their water tested free of charge.

Background and EPA Regulations

In response to the ongoing concern about lead in drinking water, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced strengthened regulations in December 2021. The goal of these revised regulations is to eliminate all lead service lines nationwide.

The City of Waco's proactive measures align with the EPA's guidelines, demonstrating a commitment to protecting public health and ensuring access to safe drinking water for its residents.
