Reminder of Signage Placement Rules Approaching General Election

September 6, 2024 - With the 2024 General Election rapidly approaching, residents are reminded to note the City of Midland's sign usage rules. Election signs - or any other temporary signage - placed in restricted areas may be removed and disposed of by City personnel.

Signs may not be posted in the right-of- way, which is generally the area between the sidewalk and curb or the area within twenty-five (25) feet of the center of the roadway. The right-of-way area is a reserved strip of land which runs adjacent to other property and is often occupied by public utilities. While property owners are required to maintain the right-of-way area adjacent to their property, the City of Midland has authority over this area per Section 22-2 of the Code of Ordinances.

Residents are also reminded that signs cannot be placed on poles for traffic control devices, traffic signs, or utilities, even temporarily. Per the City's Zoning Ordinance, total sign area on a single parcel cannot not exceed 32 square feet for residentially zoned parcels. To provide proper vision clearance for motorized and non-motorized users, signs located on a corner lot may be no more than 3 feet (36 inches) tall and must be placed at least 20 feet from the corner of the property.

Regulations regarding sign placement have been necessary for two reasons: aesthetics and safety. Signs can be attractive and helpful in advertising a business, event, candidate, or cause; however, if used improperly, they can be distracting to motorists and a potential danger to the public as well as an eyesore in our community.
