September Steel Shipments Down 2.9 Percent From Prior Month

Down 3.6 Percent YTD in 2024 from Same Period in 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported today that for the month of September 2024, U.S. steel mills shipped 7,083,141 net tons, a 1.2 percent decrease from the 7,169,942 net tons shipped in September 2023. Shipments were down 2.9 percent from the 7,292,562 net tons shipped in the previous month, August 2024. Shipments year-to-date in 2024 are 65,296,115 net tons, down 3.6% vs. 2023 shipments of 67,734,001 net tons for nine months.

A comparison of shipments year-to-date in 2024 to the first nine months of 2023 shows the following changes: cold rolled sheet, up 4 percent, corrosion resistant steel, down 1 percent and hot rolled steel, down 5 percent.
