NOPD Seeking Suspect in Sexual Assaults

NOPD's Sex Crimes Unit along with officers and detectives in the First District are searching for a suspect who allegedly sexual assaulted two women who were walking or jogging on the Lafitte Greenway on Thursday May 23, 2024.

The first assault happened at North Broad and St. Louis Street at about 7:10 a.m. The second occurred in the 3700 block of Conti Street at about 12:23 p.m.

In both cases, the female victim described the assailant as being a dark-skinned black male, wearing dark clothing and riding a bicycle.

Through investigation, detectives identified Joseph C. Davis, Black male DOB: 07-24-1985 as the alleged perpetrator of these assaults. He is being sought at this time on charges of attempted first degree rape and simple assault in connection with one of the incidents.

The NOPD is also appealing to any other females who may have been attacked or encountered the suspect in the area on May 23 or any other date, to please contact the NOPD Sex Crimes Unit at (504) 658-5523 or to call 911.

Meantime, the NOPD encourages women, especially lone walkers and joggers, to consider the following safety Tips:

1) Run with your phone

2) Enable emergency features on your watch

3) Ditch your in- or over-ear headphones

4) Stick to populated areas

5) Know the area for quick escape

6) Ping your location to quickly share if necessary

7) Empower yourself by taking a safety or self-defense course

8) Pay attention to your surroundings, not just what is immediately in front of you

9) Travel in pairs, when possible

10) If wearing ear pods, be sure to enable the function which allows for the ability to hear outside noise
