FedEx Introduces Dynamic Drive-through Pallet Dimensioning Systems, a first for the Australian FedEx Market

Sydney, Australia, 23rd July, 2024 - Federal Express Corporation, one of the world's largest express transportation companies, announced the introduction of the Dynamic Drive-through Pallet (DTP) Dimensioning Systems in its Australian operations. This technology is set to transform the pallet dimensioning process, bringing unprecedented efficiency, accuracy, and operational advancements to regional operations.

Australia marks the debut market within the FedEx global network, outside of the U.S., to introduce this technology to integrate weight capture. The FedEx newly built Adelaide facility in South Australia is the first gateway in the country to implement the Drive Through Pallet system. The enhanced capabilities of this new facility will support the growing demand for e-commerce in the South Australia region.

Since implementation, the DTP system has proven to revolutionise FedEx processing capabilities, enabling more than twice the handling speed of 400 bulk shipments per hour per device, compared to the previous rate of 150 to 200 bulk shipments per hour per device. This remarkable increase in efficiency in processing capacity within existing facilities helps accelerate delivery times for customers, promoting swifter and more reliable service.

Key advantages of the Drive-through Systems

  • Enhanced Accuracy and Safety: The Dynamic algorithms ensure highly accurate measurements, minimising discrepancies and reducing the need for manual handling, thereby lowering the risk of workplace injuries.
  • Increased Speed: Automated dimensioning reduces processing time, enabling faster transit and delivery times.
  • Cost Efficiency: Precise measurement optimises space and load planning, resulting in enhanced resource utilisation.

Leveraging laser dimensioning technology and RFID forklift tagging, the new DTP Dimensioning Systems automate and enhance the dimensioning process for palletised freight. As pallets pass through the system, precise measurements of dimensions (cuboidal or non-cuboidal) and weight are captured in real-time that are Legal for trade (LFT) certified. This breakthrough eliminates the need for manual measurement, stop-start activity and significantly reduces processing times while boosting productivity.

"At FedEx, we are dedicated to embracing innovations that elevate our operational capabilities and service offerings," said Peter Langley, vice president of FedEx Australasia. "The introduction of Dynamic Drive-through Pallet Dimensioning Systems (DTP) in our Australian operations drives greater efficiency and enhances the customer experience. We will continue innovating to further optimise our processes, creating greater value for our business and our customers."

The launch reflects the company's confidence in the Australian market and its strategic importance within its global network FedEx Australia is playing a key role in reshaping transportation and logistics operations.

The DTP system has been successfully installed and has been operational at 10 major FedEx stations across Australia. This widespread implementation ensures broad-reaching benefits and operational enhancements nationwide.

Following the successful implementation in Australia, FedEx aims to roll out this technology across its other key markets globally. This strategic initiative aligns with the company's broader vision of integrating AI and other emerging technologies to create smarter, more efficient and flexible supply chains.
