Summer Market Fun at Stanley Park

One of Liverpool's most-loved, historic parks is getting its very own weekly market throughout the summer holidays.

Grade II listed Stanley Park will host its first outdoor market every Wednesday, running from 24 July to 4 September, 9am to 3pm each week.

Located in the car park closest to Liverpool Football Club's Anfield Road stand, around 50 stalls will be available selling a huge variety of products from fashion, homeware, accessories, crafts and fresh produce. There will also be an area dedicated to delicious food and drink.

As well as the chance to purchase some locally sourced goodies, each week there will be a range of information stands, giving visitors the chance to find out information on a number of health or community-related topics.

Liverpool's Lord Mayor, Councillor Richard Kemp, will officially open the market on Wednesday 24 July.

It is the City Council's first weekday, outdoor retail market for a number of years and it is hoped that the seven-week trial run will be a huge success and the potentially return at a later date to be a regular community activity.

This free-to-attend market is the latest addition to Liverpool's well-established and popular, city-wide markets offer - from the weekly Great Homer Street Market, right through to the regular programme of farmers' and crafts markets.

The announcement comes just weeks after St George's Hall hosted a brand new market showcasing some of the best, local independent businesses around, attracting nearly 3,000 people on just one day. It was so successful, two more dates have already been added to the diary, and it will return on Sunday 6 October and Sunday 3 November.

Did you know…

The 154-year old green lung of north Liverpool is nestled between the world-famous football stadia of Anfield and Goodison.

Stanley Park is named after Frederick Arthur Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby, a former Mayor of Liverpool, the first Chancellor of the University of Liverpool and founder president of the committee for the building of Liverpool Cathedral. As Governor General of Canada he bequeathed the ice-hockey loving nation the Stanley Cup.

Liverpool City Council's Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Culture, Councillor Harry Doyle, said:

"There's a real buzz around our markets offer at the moment. St George's Hall's Summer Market was a huge success and it showed there is a real appetite for people to support small, local businesses.

"It was always our ambition to bring markets to as many locations as possible - they can be the heartbeat of the local community, bringing together fresh produce, unique crafts and friendly faces. It's a way of making neighbourhoods feel vibrant and connected - so get the dates in your diary and we look forward to welcoming you in Stanley Park every Wednesday."

Local market trader, Terry Clarke, said:

"We are looking forward to the opening of the new Stanley Park Market. There will be lots of the best quality goods at the lowest prices. Bargains for everyone!

"We hope the people of Anfield and surrounding areas come and support us and make the market a success. In these times of austerity the market is the place where you will get more for your money. We look forward to seeing you on 24 July."
