LANSING, Mich. - Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Community Service Commission announced Michigan Veteran Homes D.J. Jacobetti (MVHDJJ) Volunteer Lois Westman of Ishpeming as a recipient of a National Service Impact Award at the 2024 Governor's Service Awards, held November 14, at the Detroit Opera House.
The National Service Impact Award is awarded to individuals that have served the country through the military or AmeriCorps, or successfully supports AmeriCorps members or veterans through volunteerism to make an impact in communities.
"There are so many great volunteers at MVHDJJ, and just to be recognized is an honor, but I feel like it's an honor to serve as well," said Lois Westman. "I hope I have an opportunity to continue serving veterans at MVHDJJ and throughout the U.P. for many years to come."
Lois Westman has been serving as a volunteer at Michigan Veteran Homes D.J. Jacobetti (MVHDJJ) for over twenty years. Over those 20+ years, she has accrued more than 3,500 hours of lifetime service. She credits her brother David, a U.S. Marine veteran, for involving her with the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA). She is now a regular member of the ALA Unit 114 and a lifetime member of AMVETS Auxiliary Post 122. It is through these organizations that Westman has served at MVHDJJ. She has a special role that allows her to help plan, sponsor and execute specialty events at the Home. Another unique way that Westman volunteers is by singing and playing music on multiple instruments. No matter what she is assisting with around the Home, she always acknowledges the veteran members and thanks them for their service. Westman has become an incredibly instrumental part of MVHDJJ. She was one of the first volunteers to return after the pandemic following all the strict protocols that were necessary to return to the Home. On top of her incredible dedication to MVHDJJ, she also serves at the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). Here, she raised over $32,000 for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life Walk through her and her sister's team. With her big grin and hearty laugh, Westman brings great joy to everything she does and everyone she serves.
To recognize those who go above and beyond, the Governor's Service Awards have been presented since 1994. The Michigan Community Service Commission supports Michigan volunteers, organizations and businesses that are committed to service and play a critical role in improving the lives of our people and communities.
