Singapore and Saudi Arabia Sign MOU to Enhance Legal and Judicial Cooperation

1. The Government of Singapore and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) today, to enhance the legal and judicial cooperation between the two countries.

2. The MOU was signed by Singapore's Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Law Mr K Shanmugam SC, and Saudi Arabia's Minister of Justice H.E. Dr Waleed Mohammed bin Al-Smani. Also in attendance to witness the signing of the MOU were Minister of State, Ministry of Law and Ministry of Transport Mr Murali Pillai SC, Saudi Arabia's Ambassador to Singapore H.E. Abdullah Mohammed AlMadhi, and Saudi Arabia's Deputy Justice Minister for Laws and International Cooperation Dr Bashar Omar Al-Mofadda.

3. Under the MOU, both Singapore and Saudi Arabia agree to jointly promote international alternative dispute resolution and develop legal and judicial expertise. The MOU provides a framework for legal cooperation in several areas, including:

a) Exchanging of information, experiences and international best practices;

b) Exchange of visits between experts and specialists from both countries; and;

c) Participating in conferences, seminars, meetings, trainings, courses and work sessions organised or hosted by Singapore and Saudi Arabia.

4. Minister Shanmugam said "Singapore and Saudi Arabia enjoy excellent bilateral ties. Our relations were elevated to a strategic partnership last year. This MOU will strengthen our collaboration. We look forward to more exchanges in the legal and judicial field, and promoting international alternative dispute resolution together."

5. Minister Shanmugam and Minister Waleed also exchanged views on several topics, including working together to develop a conducive legal environment to better support businesses and stepping up exchanges between our officials and practitioners in areas such as arbitration.
