Monday, July 8 update: City urges residents to stay off roads

Good morning, Galveston. We hope you and your families are safe. If you need medical or rescue assistance, please call 9-1-1.

Hurricane Beryl made landfall at approximately 3:50 a.m. in Matagorda Bay and has been moving through the area with gusty winds and heavy rainfall. As of 9 a.m., the City of Galveston had received about 3.5" inches of rain. The tides reached approximately 4.5', which is causing some tidal flooding in low-lying areas.

SHELTER-IN-PLACE

Many streetlights are down and there is substantial debris in the roadways. There are down transformers and power lines, and it is dangerous for people to be on the road. We urge residents to stay home and shelter in place until further notice.

City crews have been working hard throughout the storm, taking assessments of damage, and placing temporary traffic safety measures. These efforts will continue and we will begin clearing roads when winds decrease. We ask for residents to help us by staying off roads for now.

POWER OUTAGE

There are also widespread power outages across the island. City leadership has been in communication with CenterPoint Energy and crews are mobilized and waiting for weather conditions to improve to begin fixing downed lines.

DEBRIS

Please stay tuned to official city sources for forthcoming information about debris clean-up. We will be updating the website at www.galvestontx.gov, Facebook @CityofGalveston, and other social media sites so continue checking back for additional information.

SAFETY TIPS AFTER THE STORM

• Be aware of hazards from exposed nails and broken glass.

• Do not touch downed power lines or objects in contact with downed lines. Report electrical hazards to the police and the utility company.

• If it is dark when you are inspecting your home, use a flashlight rather than a candle or torch to avoid the risk of fire or explosion in a damaged home.

• If you see frayed wiring or sparks, or if there is an odor of something burning, you should immediately shut off the electrical system at the main circuit breaker if you have not done so already.

• If you smell gas or suspect a leak, turn off the main gas valve, open all windows, and leave the house immediately. Notify the gas company and fire department. Do not turn on the lights, light matches, smoke, or do anything that could cause a spark. Do not return to your house until you are told it is safe to do so.
