Towns of Covert, Lansing and Ulysses - Permit Modification and Renewal Application for Cayuga Salt Mine

Negative Declaration

Tompkins and Seneca Counties - The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC), as lead agency, has determined that the proposed Permit Modification and Renewal Application for Cayuga Salt Mine will not have a significant adverse environmental impact. The action involves a proposal by Cargill, Inc. to renew and amend the facility's water storage location within the currently permitted Life-of-Mine area. The proposal consists of the establishment of additional water storage capacity within the 6-Level region, providing storage of water for a minimum of 15 years at current inflow rates. The current permit authorizes mining activities within the approved Life-of-Mine area on approximately 13,579 surface and underground acres. The modification request does not include other changes to existing and approved mining operations and methods, nor does it include a proposed expansion of the previously permitted Life-of-Mine area. The project is located at 191 Portland Point Road in the Towns of Covert, Lansing and Ulysses, New York.
