Raleigh Invests Additional $2.26 Million in Affordable Housing Projects

The Raleigh City Council continues to make affordable housing a top priority. On Tuesday, they voted to move forward with, two projects - new homes in the Cottages of Idlewild and renovations to Studios at 2800.

New Homes in Idlewild

In February, City Council approved the City's first affordable "cottage court" development, and paved the way for the Cottages of Idlewild.

This week, Council authorized $1.26 million to build 18 affordable homes in the Cottages of Idlewild. There will be 14 homes for sale and 4 available to rent. These homes will stay affordable for at least 99 years. This project ensures that future generations have access to affordable housing.

Renovating Studios at 2800

In 2021, the City of Raleigh bought a 119-room hotel on Brentwood Road, now named the Studios at 2800. This property provides extended-stay rooms as well as permanent affordable housing units.

After finding that the property needed critical repairs, City Council approved a $1 million project to make these updates. This includes adding new plumbing, heating, electrical work, doors, and windows.

On Tuesday, this contract was awarded to Shepherd Response, LLC. With this contract now in place, the critical repair work can progress, and more affordable units can soon be made available.

These projects will provide safe and affordable housing options for Raleigh residents. For more information, visit RaleighNC.gov and search "affordable housing."
