Eastbound I-44 traffic to shift next week between Rolla and St. James

Contractor to continue repair work

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo - Drivers on eastbound Interstate 44 between Rolla and St. James will see a change in traffic patterns over the weekend. Capital Paving & Construction, working under a contract with the Missouri Department of Transportation, has completed repairs to the areas with the most significant concrete quality issues. The contractor plans to complete the striping of the eastbound lanes and begin shifting traffic to normal configuration (all eastbound traffic utilizing the new eastbound lanes) at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6, with the traffic shift complete by Monday, Oct. 7 at 6 a.m. This will eliminate the head-to-head configuration that has been in place with one eastbound lane utilizing the westbound lanes.

Following the traffic shift, nightly lane closures for both east and westbound traffic are expected between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. through the end of October to remove the temporary concrete traffic barriers, grading, guard cable installation, asphalt paving and pavement marking. All lanes, both directions, are expected to remain open during daytime hours.

MoDOT and the contractor are continuing discussions and finalizing plans for the permanent repairs necessary on this stretch of roadway to ensure a quality, long-lasting product for the taxpayers of Missouri.

In 2025, the contractor will return to the eastbound lanes to make the permanent repairs to the remainder of the segments identified during the in-depth analysis of the full 8 miles of concrete placed for the eastbound lanes. The specific details, including type of repairs and traffic control plans, have yet to be determined.

This section is part of a $50.5M, multi-year project began in April 2022. The contract was originally awarded to Lehman Construction LLC, with Capital Paving & Construction taking over the contract in May 2023.
