Augustana University’s Eide/Dalrymple Gallery Features 2024 Faculty Biennial

The Eide/Dalrymple Gallery at Augustana opens "The Augustana Faculty Biennial," showcasing recent works by university art instructors and faculty, as well as faculty emeriti. The exhibit will be on view through Thursday, Nov. 7, and a gallery reception will take place from 7-9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25, with artist talks at 7:30 p.m.

This diverse show features both 2- and 3-dimensional pieces, and includes painting, drawings, ceramics, sculpture, photography, printmaking and examples of public art projects completed in stained glass. Featured faculty artists include Chad Nelson '95, Scott Parsons '87, John Henry Peters '76, Anna Reich, Dr. Lindsay Twa, Molly Uravitch, as well as faculty emeriti Tom Shields and Steve Thomas '80. The exhibit also introduces to the community the Augustana Art Department's newest faculty member Izia Lindsay, assistant professor of graphic design. (Pictured below: Izia Lindsay, "Mas Maker," digital print on archival paper, 2023)

"Hailing from Trinidad & Tobago, Lindsay's dynamic work is based in Caribbean symbolism," noted Twa, director of the Eide/Dalrymple Gallery. "He juxtaposes bold shapes and colors to express cultural narratives."

This exhibition showcases a rich variety of processes and intentions. The works engage in a dynamic conversation with one another - acting as visual markers of the vibrant exchange of ideas that thrives within the AU Art Department and its classrooms. The exhibition is a testament to the artists' individual journeys and broader, ever-evolving discourse of art in the community, where inspiration is drawn from both tradition and innovation. These works serve as markers of ongoing exploration and growth, inviting viewers to become part of the conversation.

"The most genuine, human, heartfelt art asks, 'What can I learn? What can I see? What can I feel?'" noted Parsons, Augustana Art Department chair. "And, it helps students to see their professors explore questions in their art that are perhaps similar to their own, whether it involves identity, relationships, power, emotions or memories. That's what art does - it tells us collectively that we matter, that our stories matter, that we are all connected, that beauty is incarnate in the ordinary, and learning to see better connects us more deeply to everything around us."

About the Eide/Dalrymple Gallery

As a part of Augustana University, the mission of the Eide/Dalrymple Gallery is to contribute to the educational and cultural vitality of the university, surrounding community and state of South Dakota. The Eide/Dalrymple Gallery inspires the artists of today and tomorrow, and serves as a resource for teaching and promoting life-long learning through its permanent collection and temporary exhibition program with accompanying artist visits, gallery talks and educational materials.

The Eide/Dalrymple Gallery is named after Palmer Eide and Ogden Dalrymple, pioneering Augustana professors emeriti of art. Many of their collaborative works are spread throughout the campus.

The Eide/Dalrymple Gallery is located at 30th Street and Grange Avenue, in the Center for Visual Arts at Augustana. The gallery is open to the public and free of charge. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., and Saturdays, from 1-4 p.m.
