08/19/2024 - Mayor for a Day Essay Contest

City of Olympia launches Mayor for a Day Essay Contest

The City of Olympia is announcing the inaugural launch of the City of Olympia Mayor for a Day Essay Contest. The new civic engagement program is focused on 4th, 5th and 6th grade students within the Olympia School District service boundaries.

"Our hope is to engage and educate our local youth on the workings of city government in a fun and meaningful way," said Olympia Mayor Dontae Payne.

To participate, interested youth must submit an essay of 250 words or less on the following topic: "If you were selected to be Mayor for the day, what would you do to make Olympia a better community for everyone, and how would you do it?" Be specific. Also share why you should be chosen as Mayor for the day.

The writer of the selected essay will:
  • Be "sworn in" and shadow the Olympia Mayor for a day.
  • Receive a Certificate of Recognition signed by the Mayor.
  • Be honored with a Special Recognition and have their essay read at a City Council meeting
  • Be included in a news release and photo (with parental consent) with the City Council.

The essay contest is now open and closes on September 23, 2024. All essays will be judged by a panel consisting of Mayor Payne and Mayor Pro Tem Yến Huỳhn.
