Larson-led Bill to Support Victims of Identity Theft Passes the House

Washington, D.C. - Today, House Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee Ranking Member John B. Larson (CT-01) released the following statement after the House voted to pass the bipartisan Improving Social Security's Service to Victims of Identity Theft Act he introduced with Subcommittee Chair Drew Ferguson (GA-03) to ensure victims of identity theft have a single point of contact at the Social Security Administration who tracks their case.

"Today's bipartisan vote is an important step to support victims of identity theft by providing them with a single point of contact at the Social Security Administration to follow their case to its resolution," said Larson. "I want to thank my colleague on the Social Security Subcommittee, Chair Ferguson, for joining me in this common-sense effort to make this process easier for victims of identity theft. I urge my colleagues in the Senate to pass this bill and send it to President Biden's desk for his signature.

"As 10,000 Baby Boomers become eligible for Social Security, we must also ensure we properly fund SSA and enhance benefits for the first time in more than 50 years," Larson continued. "Republicans have proposed slashing SSA's budget by nearly half a billion dollars, even though there are more Social Security beneficiaries than any other time in the program's history, and refuse to take action to enhance their benefits. In contrast, Democrats have put forward a plan, Social Security 2100, that will enhance benefits and extend the program's solvency until 2066 by 'scrapping the cap' on people making more than $400,000 a year so they pay into the program like everyone else. The nearly 70 million Americans who rely on their hard-earned Social Security benefits cannot afford to wait any longer. They deserve a vote."
