Olympic gold medal-winning figure skater to deliver the Delta Gamma Lectureship at UA
Scott Hamilton, an Olympic champion figure skater, speaker, author, activist, philanthropist and cancer survivor, will appear on Wednesday, Oct. 16, at The University of Akron's (UA) E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall, for "An Evening with Scott Hamilton & Friends," part of the Delta Gamma Lectureship in Values and Ethics.
The lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for the general public and free for anyone with a UA Zip Card. Tickets can be purchased here.
Hamilton will be introduced by former skaters and Olympic medalists Carol Heiss Jenkins and Hayes Alan Jenkins, who is an Akron native.
About Scott Hamilton
Among the most recognized male figure skating stars in the world, Hamilton has won 70 titles, awards and honors including an Emmy Award nomination, and is a member of the United States Olympic Hall of Fame and a privileged member of the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame. In 1984, Hamilton captured the attention of the world with his Olympic gold medal performances in Sarajevo. He has since shared his love and enthusiasm for the sport as an analyst/commentator, performer, producer and best-selling author of "Fritzy Finds a Hat," "Finish First: Winning Changes Everything," "The Great Eight" and "Landing It." Hamilton further inspires others as a speaker, humanitarian and as a cancer and pituitary brain tumor survivor.
After losing his mother to cancer and then becoming a survivor himself, Hamilton became an activist, launching the Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation (Cancer Alliance for Research, Education and Survivorship). He founded several education and survivorship programs including Chemocare.com and the 4th Angel Mentoring Program. In addition to those programs, Hamilton wrote "Fritzy Finds A Hat" to help ease the conversation with children about cancer, with proceeds benefitting the Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation. Events such as Sk8 to Elimin8 Cancer and An Evening with Scott Hamilton & Friends galas fund research into treatments that beat the cancer while sparing the patient.
About the Delta Gamma Lectureship
The Delta Gamma Lectureship in Values and Ethics was created in 1992 by Paul Martin in honor of his wife Dorothy "Dotty" Garrett Martin, who was part of the Akron "Eta" chapter of the sorority. The goal of the speaker series is to establish a venue on college campuses where values and ethics could be discussed in an open format.
Today, Lectureships are held on 20 campuses with an additional Lectureship hosted at the Delta Gamma Convention. Although each Lectureship has its own style and personality, the underlying theme of values and ethics is constant. Speakers range from well-known celebrities, political figures and entrepreneurs to those unsung heroes who have overcome adversities or established organizations that further the Delta Gamma motto to do good.
