TAMPA, FL. (November 20, 2024) - - The Tampa Police Department is addressing a recent death investigation that has generated significant online speculation and phone calls to police agencies in Florida and Texas.

As a general practice, the Tampa Police Department does not issue a news release relating to suicide investigations to avoid causing additional distress to the families of those affected. However, due to misinformation circulating online relating to this specific investigation, it is necessary to provide accurate information and address the harmful impact that can result from those posting unsubstantiated speculation.

On November 16, 2024, Tampa Police responded to a report of a deceased male found in a wooded, fenced area near a local hotel in the 5300 block of W. Kennedy Blvd. Upon arrival, officers discovered the body of 21-year-old Ernesto Mederos. There were no signs of foul play or trauma.

Detectives conducted a thorough investigation, learning that Ernesto had come to Florida from Texas, telling his family he was assisting with hurricane relief efforts. His family in Texas had reported him as missing. Based on the evidence gathered, including the Medical Examiner's report, it has been determined that Ernesto died by suicide.

The Tampa Police Department extends our heartfelt condolences to Ernesto's family and friends during this difficult time.
