Waynesburg U. Music Program to present fall concert

Waynesburg University's Music Program will present its annual fall concert on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in Roberts Chapel, featuring the Symphonic Band and the Lamplighters Concert Choir. The concert is free and the public is cordially invited to attend.

Eric Brewer, instructor of music and director of the music program, will direct the Symphonic Band, and the Lamplighters will be under the direction of Melanie Catana, assistant professor of vocal music and director of choral music.

The Symphonic Band will play a variety of pieces from the standard wind band repertoire, including the "Incidental Suite" written by Claude T. Smith in 1966. This piece is composed of three movements: "Tarantella," "Nocturne" and "Rondo."

In addition, the Symphonic Band will perform "Overture for the Shrimp Who Fried Rice," a new piece composed by senior music major Logan Campbell.

"Logan has written several pieces that the band has performed since I've been here. He keeps improving, and the students are looking forward to performing this piece," said Brewer.

Campbell shared that the piece is meant to be playful and fun for the performers.

"I used this title as sort of a joke but also, it matches how light and fun the piece is. It is fun for the band to rehearse, and that alone is great for me to see; I'm very mindful of things musicians like playing," he explained.

The Lamplighters Concert Choir will perform traditional Christmas music and will be accompanied by the Symphonic Band for "Hark the Herald Angels Sing."
