Billings Rd Improvements Part of Historic Season of City-Wide Roadwork
Published September 19, 2024
A full overhaul of Billings Road in North Quincy that includes major pedestrian and traffic improvements is now complete, capping a construction season that has seen nearly 50 miles of new underground infrastructure and roadway improvements citywide, Mayor Thomas Koch announced this week.

On Billings Road, a new crossing with a pedestrian refuge via a median island has been added at the entrance to Parker Elementary School. The median island helps address issues with speeding on Billings Road and issues with U-turn conflicts related to pick-up and drop-off for the school, officials said.

In coordination with Quincy Public Schools, parking was relocated in front of Parker Elementary School to add a pick-up/drop-off lane, allowing students to exit vehicles onto the sidewalk and remove double parking in front of the school during peak times. Sidewalks along the corridor were reconstructed to create a continuously accessible surface for pedestrians.

Across the City of Quincy, upgrades are on-going capping off a historic season of road work this summer. 30 streets covering 7.5 miles are having water main replacement. 124 streets for 17 miles of sewer lining and excavation, 37 streets for 10.4 miles of roadway crack sealing. 36 streets for 10.23 miles of roadway/sidewalk improvements and 4 streets of .43 miles of new drainage improvements.

"When we look at our roadway infrastructure - we're looking at all of it, not just the condition of the road. By replacing water lines, repairing sewer lines and improving drainage as well as redesigning roads to maximize safety - and that doesn't include all the work National Grid is doing on electric and gas systems -- it provides a major long-term benefit for our neighborhoods rather than just the band-aid approach of throwing down asphalt on the road and calling it a day," said Mayor Koch "We're making great progress, and getting more done than ever before. I'm proud of the work of DPW Commissioner Grazioso and TPAL Director Ed Grennon and their teams for what's been a truly historic period of infrastructure renewal in our City."
