EPA Extends Public Comment Period on Proposed Changes to Cleanup Plan for the Welsbach & General Gas Mantle Superfund Site at Gloucester Marine Terminal in New Jersey

Gloucester City, N.J.- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is extending the public comment period for the proposed modification of the cleanup plan for the Welsbach & General Gas Mantle Superfund Site. Originally set to end on September 17, the new deadline for public comments is now October 17. The EPA held a public meeting on August 19 to explain the proposed plan.
EPA's amended cleanup plan would involve:

Removalof radiologically contaminated soil and waste material from selected areas at the Gloucester Marine Terminal, including under buildings, to a depth of approximately 10 feet.

Disposalof excavated material at an off-site, licensed, and EPA-approved facility.

Backfillingof excavated areas with clean soil to restore the site.

Restoring paved areas to their previous condition.

Putting in place institutional controls, such as deed restrictions, to limit access to remaining contaminated areas.
