Staying the Course for Progress

The 2024 presidential election was one of the most closely watched and pivotal elections in recent history. As the results were announced, reactions ranged from disappointment to celebration to cautious optimism. The outcome was neither surprising nor disappointing for me as it reflected today's political reality.

The resilience and determination of presidential candidate Kamala Harris stood out during this election. Launching one of the shortest general election campaigns in U.S. history, Harris demonstrated remarkable strength in rallying support and advocating for her vision for America. However, the brevity of her campaign was at an undeniable disadvantage compared to former President Donald Trump, who leveraged over four years of preparation for his re-election bid. Despite mixed emotions about the results, this election reaffirmed an important truth: our work as advocates and organizers does not end at the ballot box.

Throughout this election cycle, the NAACP made monumental strides to empower voters and ensure access to the democratic process. From youth councils and college chapters to branches, state conferences, and the national level, we engaged communities nationwide to educate voters on what was at stake. As a NAACP Democracy Fellow, I had the privilege of being part of these efforts.

Our work as advocates and organizers does not end at the ballot box.

Working with colleges like Grand Valley State University and organizations like the Greater Grand Rapids Branch NAACP, I supported get-out-the-vote (GOTV) initiatives that energized first-time and seasoned voters alike. We provided rides to polling locations, supplied food and water to ensure comfort at polling sites, and even hosted "party to the polls" events to create excitement around voting. Beyond these tangible services, our work was rooted in a deep commitment to making sure every individual felt their voice mattered in shaping the future of this country.

The NAACP's mission remains steadfast and non-partisan: to ensure everyone exercises their democratic power. This year, we saw firsthand how small efforts can lead to monumental impact. However, the election results remind us that advocacy continues once the votes are counted. Progress requires sustained effort, collaboration, and a willingness to adapt to whatever challenges arise.

As we look ahead, we must resist the temptation to become divided. Now more than ever, unity is critical. Whether we celebrate or critique the outcome of this election, we share a responsibility to advocate for our communities and push for the change we wish to see. Sitting on the sidelines is not an option. Regardless of the political landscape, we must work with what we have, focusing on equity, justice, and opportunity for all.

Progress requires sustained effort, collaboration, and a willingness to adapt to whatever challenges arise.

The road forward will be challenging, but we must travel it together. Every election cycle is a reminder of the power of collective action, and the resilience of our communities shines brightest in moments of uncertainty. Let us channel the energy of this election into action, whether that is through organizing, volunteering, or simply staying engaged on the issues that matter most.

The fight for a more just and equitable future continues, and it starts with us. Let us remain diligent, united, and unwavering in our commitment to progress.
