Denton Passes Ordinances to Protect Residents During Extreme Temperatures

DENTON, TX, July 11, 2024 - The City of Denton has adopted two ordinances that are aimed at enhancing resident's quality of life by ensuring access to essential air conditioning during the hot summer months. These measures underscore the City's commitment to public health safety, and welfare, especially as high temperatures are hazardous.

Mandatory Air Conditioning in Rental Units: This ordinance mandates that all landlords within the city limits provide air conditioning systems in residential rental units. This measure is designed to guarantee that indoor environments remain safe and comfortable during extreme heat.

Protection of Residents' Right to Use Window AC Units: In response to community feedback and to further support residents, Denton City Council has also passed an ordinance prohibiting community associations from restricting the use of window air conditioning units. This decision ensures that residents can utilize such cooling devices during extreme heat conditions, protecting their health and safety regardless of any previously existing association rules.

"The well-being of our community is a top priority for the City of Denton" says City Manager Sara Hensley. "With the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme heat, it is crucial that we take proactive steps to protect our residents, especially those who may be most vulnerable."

The ordinances went into effect immediately, and the City's Community Improvement Services Division is ready to achieve compliance by assisting landlords and residents with the transition.
